U.S. Stocks Rebound as Investors Brace: Explained

U.S. Stocks Rebound as investors balancing company performance against fluctuating market confidence. U.S. equities bounced back on Friday after a turbulent week, while focus shifted to upcoming corporate earnings and reports of improved sales at Burberry.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 423 points, or 0.8%, to 51,655. The S&P 500 gained 46 points, or 0.6%, to 7,812, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 173 points, or 0.6%, to close at 27,366, according to market data.

This recovery arrived in the wake of Thursday’s selloff. Concerns regarding artificial intelligence revenues appeared to subside, allowing the three major indexes to recoup losses from consecutive sessions.

Investors are now facing a new challenge. As earnings season begins, the market will gain fresh insight into corporate performance and company projections for the coming months.

Bank results in focus as earnings season starts

JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs are scheduled to report next Tuesday, alongside Johnson & Johnson, Domino’s Pizza, and UnitedHealth. Later in the week, investors expect updates from semiconductor firms ASML and TSMC, as well as Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America.

These reports may help determine whether corporate earnings are strong enough to sustain the market’s recovery. Investors continue to evaluate growth prospects within the AI sector.

Short-term nerves remain.

The same market coverage noted pressure on several individual companies. Delta Air Lines lowered its 2026 adjusted earnings forecast to a range of $5.10 to $5.60 per share, down from its previous estimate of $6.50 to $7.50, citing increased jet fuel expenses. Its quarterly earnings also fell short of analyst expectations.

Telecom stocks including AT&T, T-Mobile US, and Verizon Communications declined following news that SpaceX is expanding Starlink into mobile services. This development introduces a company-specific pressure point for investors evaluating the sector.

Burberry offers a separate FTSE 100 signal

A separate Yahoo Finance report highlighted Burberry, a constituent of the FTSE 100, and signs of a business turnaround under CEO Joshua Schulman. The report indicated that retail revenue grew 5% to £455m in the latest first quarter, marking growth across all four product categories for the first time in three years.

Comparable retail sales also increased by 5%, while total retail floor space decreased by 1%. The report noted that handbag sales saw double-digit growth during Mother’s Day in the Americas, and digital sales experienced mid-teens growth.

These gains follow a period of significant decline. Burberry shares had dropped 44% over five years and 61% since April 2023, according to the report. In a trading update for Q1 FY25 released in July 2024, the company reported a 22% drop in retail revenue, from £589m to £458m, and an operating loss of £53m for the first half of that year.

Schulman said the company was attracting customers across product categories, channels and geographies. He also said sales at full price meant less discounting and markdown activity than the previous year.

The report cautioned that inflation remains a challenge for Burberry. It also noted that weaker tourism linked to conflict in the Middle East could impact sales in the company’s EMEIA region.

For investors, these figures highlight the various forces shaping market sentiment: a broad recovery in U.S. equities, upcoming corporate results, and specific risks facing individual businesses. Burberry’s retail revenue in its latest Q1 reached £455m.
