The market will close on Monday, September 7, to observe Labor Day, and will resume trading on Tuesday, September 8.
In 2026, the market will observe ten holidays, two of which involve early closings. Most of these holidays coincide with federal and banking holidays.
Is the stock market open today?
The standard trading hours for the U.S. stock market are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq both follow these hours, and both exchanges are closed on weekends.
Orders to buy or sell stocks and ETFs can still be placed during extended trading hours, but this carries additional risk. Lower after‑hour volume can lead to greater price volatility, and orders may not fill completely.

The NYSE and Nasdaq will observe the following holidays in 2026:
New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1
Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 19
Washington’s Birthday (Presidents’ Day) – Monday, February 16
Juneteenth National Independence Day – Friday, June 19
Independence Day (observed) – Friday, July 3
Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 26
Both exchanges will also close early at 1 p.m. Eastern time on the following days in 2026:
Friday, November 27 (the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday)
Thursday, December 24 (Christmas Eve)
Stock market holidays for 2027
In 2027, the NYSE and Nasdaq will observe these holidays:
Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Monday, January 18
Washington’s Birthday (Presidents’ Day) – Monday, February 15
Juneteenth National Independence Day (observed) – Friday, June 18
Independence Day (observed) – Monday, July 5
Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 25
Christmas Day (observed) – Friday, December 24
In 2027, both exchanges will close early at 1 p.m. Eastern time on the following day:
Friday, November 26 (the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday)
When holidays that occur on the same calendar date each year—such as the Fourth of July and Christmas Day—fall on a Saturday, the market closes the preceding Friday; if they fall on a Sunday, it closes the following Monday.
An exception occurs when New Year’s Day falls on a Saturday: the exchanges remain open for regular hours on the preceding Friday, and the holiday is not observed by Wall Street.
American financial markets also close for a National Day of Mourning when a former or current president dies, usually on the day of the funeral.
What about the bond market?
The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) sets the bond market schedule. Regular bond market hours run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.
In 2026 and 2027, bond markets close on all ten stock market holidays, as well as on Indigenous Peoples’ Day (formerly Columbus Day) in October and Veterans Day in November.
Bond markets also close early at 2 p.m. on these dates:
Thursday before Good Friday (Maundy Thursday)
July 2 (the day before Independence Day)
Friday after Thanksgiving (Black Friday)

Is the stock market closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving?
The market remains open on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but it closes early at 1 p.m. Eastern time. This is one of only two or three days each year when the market ends before 4 p.m.
