Is the stock market open on Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples Day?

Here’s the holiday trading schedule for 2026 and 2027.

The stock market will be open on Monday, Oct. 12, for Columbus Day, which is recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day in various cities and states. The Investors can still place orders for stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) during extended hours, though this comes with increased risk. Because trading volume is lower after hours, prices can be more volatile, and there is no guarantee that your orders will be fully executed.

If you are ever unsure whether the stock market is open, you can refer to this list of market holidays for 2026 and 2027.

Stock market holidays for 2026

The NYSE and Nasdaq will observe the following holidays in 2026:

Friday, Nov. 27 (the day after Thanksgiving, aka Black Friday)

Thursday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)

Juneteenth National Independence Day (observed): Friday, June 18

Independence Day (observed): Monday, July 5

Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, Nov. 25

Christmas Day (observed): Friday, Dec. 24

In 2027, the NYSE and Nasdaq will close at 1 p.m. Eastern time on this day:

Friday, Nov. 26 (the day after Thanksgiving, aka Black Friday)

For holidays that occur on a fixed date annually, such as Christmas Day or the Fourth of July, the market typically closes on the preceding Friday if the holiday falls on a Saturday, or the following Monday if it falls on a Sunday.

One exception exists: If New Year’s Day lands on a Saturday, the exchanges remain open for normal hours on the preceding Friday, and the holiday is not observed by Wall Street.

Most U.S. financial markets also shut down for a National Day of Mourning following the passing of a sitting or former president. This is usually observed on the day of the funeral.
