US Stock Market Today: S&P 500 Futures Edge Higher On Fed Decision Watch

US stocks are positioned for a modestly positive start, with futures trading slightly higher as the market focuses on tonight’s rate moves alive.

This environment is significant for investors because it dictates borrowing costs for mortgages, credit lines, and corporate debt. If the market remains confident that interest rates are nearing their peak, equity risk appetite should remain stable. However, any skepticism regarding this outlook could quickly lead to rising yields and lower valuations for sectors sensitive to interest rates.

The core question remains: will the Fed’s statement tonight signal another rate hike in December, or will it suggest that current levels are sufficient? The tone of this communication could challenge today’s cautiously optimistic futures and alter how investors approach risk as the year draws to a close.

Stocks to Watch Before the Opening Bell

HCA Healthcare reported third-quarter 2026 results, showing a 3.6% increase in revenue and a 4.5% rise in diluted EPS. Management noted a shift in the payer mix due to an increase in uninsured patient volumes, which they estimate reduced pre-tax income by approximately US$400 million for the quarter.

Investors will be monitoring how the company balances admissions growth, insured revenue per admission, and cost-management efforts through the end of the year.

Circle Internet Group is back in the spotlight after Mizuho downgraded the stock to an Underperform rating and lowered its price target to US$43. The brokerage identified AI assistant tools as a potential risk to USDC usage and Circle’s reserve revenue, suggesting that users might be encouraged to shift toward higher-yielding financial products.

Mizuho projects that such a transition could decrease the market value of USDC by US$4 billion to US$9 billion over the medium term.

Chevron is restructuring its offshore portfolio as TotalEnergies acquires a 25% working interest in 26 exploration leases operated by Chevron in the US. In exchange, Chevron is obtaining a 75% stake in two nearby exploration leases currently held by TotalEnergies.

These adjusted positions provide both companies with access to various exploration opportunities and integrate Chevron more closely with existing production assets in the region.
