Wall Street finishes its record

The U.S. stock market concluded a record-breaking week with gains on Friday, even as other financial sectors remained uncertain.

The S&P 500 rose 0.6 per cent, marking its first increase since hitting an all-time high three days earlier. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 423 points, or 0.8 per cent, while the Nasdaq composite climbed 0.6 per cent.

This momentum arrived as oil prices fluctuated due to uncertainty regarding when the conflict with Iran might allow the global energy sector to inflation, the U.S. government’s substantial debt, and indicators of continued economic growth. Elevated yields risk slowing the economy by increasing borrowing costs for everyone, and the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage has already surged to its highest level in nearly three years.

Yields are also climbing in international bond markets, which reduces investor appetite for stocks and other assets. However, these high yields have drawn interest to recent Treasury auctions, and that demand is helping to temper further yield increases.

On Wall Street, Humana rallied 11.6 per cent, helping to lift the U.S. market despite volatility in the oil and bond sectors. The insurer reported receiving encouraging data regarding its quality ratings compared to competitors for Medicare Advantage plans.

Companies specializing in cell towers also led the market, with Crown Castle jumping 15.6 per cent and American Tower rising 9.3 per cent.

These stocks rallied after SpaceX announced a purchase that could position it as a major U.S. mobile carrier. While the deal still requires regulatory approval, SpaceX stated that acquiring low-band spectrum would enable its Starlink Mobile service to provide signals capable of penetrating walls, connecting customers inside buildings who currently lack satellite access. SpaceX’s stock rose 1.2 per cent.

The prospect of a new major competitor caused wireless industry stocks to decline, with T-Mobile US dropping 13.3 per cent, AT&T falling 9.8 per cent, and Verizon sliding 8.7 per cent.

Delta Air Lines recovered from an early dip to post a marginal gain of less than 0.1 per cent after reporting summer profit and revenue figures that fell slightly short of analyst expectations. CEO Ed Bastian said demand remains strong and customers want to fly, but the airline is also absorbing a US$6 billion increase in fuel costs this year.

Companies are under pressure to deliver robust profit growth after their stock prices climbed toward record levels despite the downward pressure from rising bond yields. Next week will feature high-profile earnings reports from major banks, including Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo, all scheduled for Tuesday.

Expectations for corporate profits remain high, even as Americans report feeling increased strain from inflation. A preliminary report from the University of Michigan indicated on Friday that U.S. consumers are raising their inflation forecasts for the coming year.

They now anticipate inflation of 4.7 per cent, up from 4.6 per cent last month and 3.4 per cent in February before the war with Iran began. Consumer sentiment is falling sharply among Americans with lower incomes and smaller stock market investments, who are least equipped to handle rapid increases in the cost of living.

In total, the S&P 500 rose 46.18 points to 7,811.54. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 423.31 to 51,654.95, and the Nasdaq composite gained 172.83 to 27,366.17.

In international markets, European indexes rallied, with gains of at least 1 per cent in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Asian markets showed mixed results. Japan’s Nikkei 225 finished nearly flat, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index jumped 1.8 per cent.
