Abakkus Mutual Fund is entering the Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) segment with Fokkus, its new platform that will offer investment strategies across equity, debt and hybrid categories.

The fund house said it received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on August 28, 2026, to establish the SIF. Individual strategies will be introduced after the necessary regulatory filings and approvals.

For investors, the announcement is significant because an SIF is different from a regular mutual fund, both in terms of the minimum investment required and the flexibility available to the fund manager.

    What is an SIF?

SEBI introduced the SIF framework with effect from April 1, 2025, creating a new investment category within the mutual fund regulatory framework.

One of the biggest differences is the entry threshold. An investor generally needs to maintain a minimum investment of Rs 10 lakh across all investment strategies offered by a particular SIF, calculated at PAN level. The requirement does not apply to accredited investors.

    Importantly,

Abakkus plans to introduce equity, debt and hybrid investment strategies under Fokkus.

However, the fund house has not yet announced the investment objectives, asset allocation, risk factors or launch dates of individual strategies. These details will be disclosed after the required regulatory filings and approvals.

So, Fokkus itself should not yet be viewed as an investment product available for subscription. The current announcement marks Abakkus’ entry into the SIF business; investors will need to wait for details of the individual strategies before evaluating them.

Sunil Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director, Abakkus, said the SIF framework provides flexibility to pursue differentiated investment strategies while addressing investors’ evolving needs.

“We intend to use this flexibility thoughtfully, remaining anchored in our investment philosophy and focused on opportunities across market cycles,” Singhania said. The fund house expects to introduce its initial strategies in the coming months.

Where do SIFs fit for investors?

The Rs 10 lakh minimum investment itself means SIFs are not positioned as mass-market mutual fund products.

At the same time, their entry threshold is below the minimum investment required for some other managed investment structures. The minimum ticket size for portfolio management services (PMS) is Rs 50 lakh, while AIFs generally require a minimum commitment of Rs 1 crore.

Vaibhav Chugh, Chief Executive Officer, Abakkus Mutual Fund, said investor and partner education would be an important focus as the fund house enters the category.

“We will work closely with our distribution partners to build a clear understanding of the structure, suitability and potential role of SIFs in an investor’s portfolio,” he said.

For investors considering Fokkus, the key details will therefore come with the individual strategy launches, including where the money will be invested, use of derivatives and short positions, costs, liquidity conditions and risk factors.
