US President Donald Trump has been involved in business dealings.
Trump told reporters on Wednesday: “You know why I’m profiting, because the stock market’s going up, everybody’s profiting.”
He said: “I don’t get involved in my personal [finances], we have funds that run my money.
“I’ve made a lot of money before I became president, and they invest my money, and I don’t talk to them.”
In 2021, Trump famously described cryptocurrency as a “disaster waiting to happen”.
However, during his presidential campaign three years later, he expressed a desire to turn the US into the “crypto capital of the planet”. One of his initial moves upon returning to the White House last year was issuing an executive order to “support the responsible growth” of the digital asset industry.
Richard Painter, who served as the chief White House ethics lawyer under George W Bush, told the BBC that it was “extraordinary” for Trump to have earned $1bn from crypto.
“Of course it’s a conflict of interest,” he said.
Will Walker-Arnott, director of private clients at Raymond James Wealth Management, noted: “His approach, I suppose, is in contrast to previous presidents in terms of money making.
“Jimmy Carter put his peanut farm into a blind trust and George W Bush sold his interest in the Texas Rangers before becoming president, but Trump seems to be operating in a very different manner and seems to be making a lot of money through this family crypto company.”

These ventures included $4.7m in royalties from Trump-branded watches, alongside revenue from Trump-branded Bibles, footwear, fragrances, and guitars.
First Lady Melania Trump also disclosed her 2025 earnings. She received $10.7m from a “license agreement” tied to a documentary about her that premiered last year.
An additional $6m in income was attributed to her from the sale of NFTs, which are digital collectibles sold online.
The president reported roughly $86.5m in income stemming from settlements in various legal cases.
These included $16m from a lawsuit against ABC, $16m from CBS Broadcasting and CBS Interactive, $24.5m from Meta, $22m from YouTube, and $8m from X.
However, the White House stated that the majority of those funds were directed toward Trump’s future presidential library or a nonprofit organization focused on maintaining park sites in the Washington DC area.
