Mark Cuban: Your 401(k) makes you part of the cost of healthcare problem — should you ditch funds tied to Big Insurance?

Mark Cuban claims that more than half of all Americans are inadvertently helping the nation’s largest health insurance providers prioritize profits over patient care.

The billionaire entrepreneur and founder of Cost Plus Drugs has spent the last decade searching for ways to fix the country’s struggling healthcare system. Now, he is urging everyday Americans whose retirement accounts help finance major insurance firms to join his cause.

Jeff Bezos backs a platform that lets anyone invest in rental homes for as little as $100.

If you hold shares in a fund that owns any of the major insurance carriers, you are part of the healthcare cost problem in this country, the billionaire entrepreneur wrote on X.

Cuban added that publicly traded insurance companies “put the share price over the health of you, your family, co-workers and friends.”

“Tell the funds you own that you will sell if they don’t divest their interests in the biggest insurance companies,” he continued. “You can make a difference.”

As of 2025, Gallup found that 62% of Americans owned stocks, including shares held through funds and retirement accounts. Cuban suggests that this means you could be contributing to the rising affordability crisis, whether directly or indirectly.

One widely held fund that includes insurance companies is the Vanguard Total trillion in total <a s portion, hit $28,303 in 2026. This represents a 5% increase from the prior year, with employees contributing an average of $7,471 from their own paychecks.

Cuban contends that insurers drive these costs higher through their specific payment and claims processes.

“They underpay, late pay, delay, deny,” he replied to an X user, accusing insurers of clawing back payments from medical providers, misrepresenting contracts, and blocking employers from properly auditing claims.
