The American Dream Costs $5.3 Million—and Cars Are a Surprisingly High Part of It

Key Takeaways

Car ownership accounts for approximately $1.2 million, or 23% of the total cost of the American Dream in 2026.

Expenses such as fuel, insurance, maintenance, and other operational costs exceed the initial purchase price of the vehicles.

While automobiles have historically been a staple of the American Dream, they are also a primary factor in why many people feel that lifestyle is increasingly unattainable.

According to an analysis by Investopedia, families should anticipate spending roughly $1.2 million on purchasing, servicing, and fueling vehicles throughout their adult lives. This figure represents about 23% of the $5.3 million lifetime cost of the American Dream, which also encompasses expenses for seven other traditional milestones: homeownership, raising two children and funding their college education, retirement, healthcare, weddings, pet ownership, and annual vacations.

Cars Are the Second-Priciest Part of the American Dream

Investopedia’s analysis examines a couple’s driving years, spanning from age 22 to 75, at which point driving frequency typically declines. The study assumes a couple maintains two vehicles, replaces them roughly every decade, and logs approximately 15,000 miles annually.

The $1.2 million price tag positions car ownership as the second most expensive component of the American Dream, trailing only homeownership, which costs nearly $1.3 million. Based on the Investopedia analysis, a couple earning median salaries will find that fueling their vehicles is the most significant ongoing expense, totaling about $207,000. This estimate is based on AAA’s average cost of 13 cents per mile driven during the 12-month period concluding in mid-2025.
