Fed rate pause raises concerns over costs and global growth

The US Federal Reserve (FED) opted to keep its benchmark interest rate steady following the hike implemented in September 2026. During the October 28 meeting, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) maintained the target range at 3.75–4 per cent.

While this outcome was widely anticipated by the markets and provided a brief sense of stability for financial sectors, it offered little immediate relief for the average household.

The primary hurdle for the FOMC remains balancing economic growth against persistent inflationary pressures. Although the economy continues to show strength, inflation is still tracking above the Fed’s 2 per cent target.

The Committee noted that it requires further data before deciding on its subsequent policy actions. Notably, two of the twelve members cast votes for an immediate 25-basis-point increase, underscoring ongoing anxiety regarding inflation.

Factors such as rising energy costs, geopolitical instability, and robust demand could sustain price pressures. Consequently, this pause should be viewed as a period of evaluation rather than the start of a long-term hold or a cycle of rate cuts.

WARNING SIGNAL FOR THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

The main concern is that shifts in US monetary policy often influence interest-rate decisions worldwide. However, central banks do not automatically mirror the Fed, as their choices largely depend on domestic inflation, exchange-rate frameworks, and other local economic conditions.

Elevated oil prices and shipping expenses are placing strain on the trade balances of oil-importing nations like India. These trends have the potential to drive inflation higher and dampen growth prospects.

When inflation stays above target levels, central banks may choose to raise investment, and consumer spending, even in instances where local inflation trends differ from those in the US.

Regarding the Indian economy, the stock market reacted positively to the decision to hold rates. Global investors may view this as a window to pursue carry trade strategies, which could provide a boost to both stock and bond markets.

However, the scale and longevity of such inflows may be limited, depending on factors like the Indian interest rate outlook, currency fluctuations, and overall economic growth.

A high-interest-rate environment typically exerts downward pressure on gold prices. Because gold does not generate interest or dividends, its returns are primarily driven by price appreciation.

When investors anticipate that interest rates and bond yields will rise, they often shift capital from gold into interest-bearing assets. Furthermore, a stronger US dollar can make gold, which is priced in dollars, more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

After hitting record highs earlier in 2026, gold prices have seen a sharp retreat. Gold futures settled at approximately $3,886 per troy ounce on October 30, 2026, reflecting the impact of inflation concerns and expectations for tighter US monetary policy.

Nevertheless, gold’s scarcity and status as a safe-haven asset may continue to support its inclusion in a diversified portfolio over the medium to long term. Investors might consider a cautious, incremental approach to gold, preferably through digital or non-physical channels rather than purchasing physical bullion.

The real warning lies not in the pause itself but in the uncertainty regarding future actions. The lack of a dovish tone at the latest FOMC meeting, combined with the split vote on holding rates steady, suggests the possibility of a prolonged period of tighter monetary policy.

With the next FOMC meeting set for early December 2026, markets will be closely monitoring data on inflation, employment, and energy prices for clues regarding the Fed’s next move. The challenge for policymakers remains striking a delicate balance between curbing inflation and maintaining economic growth.
