Gold gains, silver slips as oil prices rise, Fed rate hike expectations persist

Spot gold prices saw modest gains while silver retreated during early U.S. trading on Wednesday. Markets are currently balancing concerns over energy supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz against the ongoing expectation that the Federal Reserve will maintain a restrictive monetary policy. Gold found some stability due to a decline in concerns about the inflationary impact of a prolonged conflict.

For gold, ongoing uncertainty regarding Gulf security supports defensive demand, but rising crude prices simultaneously reinforce inflation expectations and the likelihood of restrictive U.S. monetary policy. This tug-of-war explains why bullion has struggled to maintain rallies despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions. Silver faces similar headwinds from interest rates, with its industrial utility making it particularly sensitive to signs of economic deceleration. The combination of potential Fed tightening and the unpredictable nature of oil prices continues to cloud the near-term outlook for both metals.

Global equity markets were mixed to firmer ahead of the U.S. open, supported by a new wave of corporate earnings in the technology sector. Nasdaq futures rose roughly 0.4% and S&P 500 futures added 0.2%, while Dow futures remained largely flat. Asian markets generally trended higher, with South Korea’s Kospi rising 3.3% and Japan’s Nikkei 225 advancing as investors moved back into semiconductor and AI-related stocks. European markets were mixed, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 near flat, the DAX in Germany slightly lower, and France’s CAC 40 posting small gains. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 declined under pressure from mining stocks. Investors are currently weighing quarterly results and the impact of high financing costs on tech investment, while fiscal uncertainty in France continues to weigh on European government bond markets.

Key outside markets show Nymex WTI crude oil trading higher near $99.40 a barrel, with Brent crude near $111.00. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is trading near 5.1%. The U.S. dollar index is slightly firmer in early trading, reflecting the view that U.S. monetary policy will remain restrictive despite recent evidence of an economic slowdown.

From a technical perspective, the next upside target for spot gold bulls is to push prices above the $4,154.00 to $4,180.00 resistance zone, with a sustained breakout aiming for $4,199.00 and then $4,200.00. The next near-term downside target for bears is a move below $4,083.00, with further support at $4,070.00 and $4,053.00. Initial resistance is pegged at $4,154.00, followed by $4,180.00. Initial support is at $4,083.00, followed by $4,070.00.

Spot silver bulls are looking to drive prices back above the $57.860 to $58.370 resistance range, with a move above that level targeting $58.700 and then $60.835. The next downside objective for bears is a break below $56.920, with deeper targets at $56.720 and $56.340. Initial resistance is identified at $57.860, followed by $58.370. Next support is at $57.390, followed by $56.920.
