Republicans are heading into the midterm elections facing the highest inflation update prior to the critical midterm elections arrives as polling indicates widespread public frustration with the Trump administration regarding the cost of living.

Price hikes are at their most significant level since the annual inflation rate hit a three-year high of 4.2% in May. Gasoline was responsible for more than half of the total price increases, climbing 34% compared to last year. Fuel oil, essential for home heating, surged by 74% over the same period, presenting a concerning outlook for families as winter approaches. Additionally, air travel costs, which many Americans depend on for holiday transit, rose by 22.4%.

In total, consumer prices climbed 0.6% from August. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, also saw a 0.3% monthly increase, reaching 2.6% on an annual basis.

Price surges this year have been largely fueled by the US-Israel war with Iran, which has caused energy costs to spike. Average gas prices remain more than a dollar per gallon higher than they were a year ago diesel, which is vital for domestic supply chains, hit a record high last month

September’s inflation rate marks the highest level recorded before a midterm election since 1990, excluding the pandemic era.

The economy has consistently ranked as a primary concern for American voters, as persistent inflation and rising gasoline costs continue to strain household budgets. Higher energy prices resulting from the war with Iran have cost the average American household more than $1,020, according to data.
