The Federal Reserve on Wednesday implemented its first interest rate increase in over three years, marking a renewed effort to combat inflation that has accelerated since the start of the year due to the conflict with Iran.

Officials reached a unanimous decision to lift the benchmark lending rate by a quarter percentage point, bringing it to a range of 3.75%-4%. This vote included Chairman Kevin Warsh, who was selected by President Donald Trump to lead the nation’s central bank.

The Fed’s commitment to raising rates highlights its ongoing concerns regarding inflation, which has remained elevated for the past five years. A robust labor market is also providing the Fed with the flexibility to prioritize inflation control.

“Today’s policy action will support a timelier return to the Committee’s 2 percent goal,” officials wrote in their latest policy statement. Annual inflation, as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, has trended closer to 4% than 2% in recent months.

During a post-meeting news conference, Warsh explained that three factors had shifted since the Fed’s July gathering: the economy had gained strength, inflation had failed to decelerate, and geopolitical tensions had escalated. He cited these as the primary drivers behind his vote for a Wall Street’s expectations, but signaled no further increases for 2027. Warsh again declined to submit personal projections during this meeting, maintaining his stance against providing forward guidance or estimates regarding the future path of interest rates.

Wednesday’s move represents the first major interest rate action under Warsh, who has consistently maintained that he is operating independently as the head of the Fed. This rate hike could potentially create friction with Trump, who appointed him following repeated public pressure on the central bank to lower rates.

While responding to questions from the press, Warsh addressed topics including inflation, the economic consequences of the war with Iran, the bond market, and the potential impact of AI on the US economy.

Here are key takeaways from the Fed’s decision to raise rates for the first time since July 2023.

The Fed’s latest move follows months of instability in the Middle East, which has disrupted energy markets and threatens to make inflation more persistent and widespread. The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge for August is scheduled for release later this month.
